THE cubs of Byfleet had their dustbin bags at the ready on Saturday when they gave Plough Green and the village a spring clean.

Byfleet Amenities Group annually arrange the day to give the village a tidy and Serco handed out litter pickers and bright yellow high-visibility jackets to the cubs from the Byfleet Panthers and Byfleet Tigers packs.

Jean Smith, member of the group, said: “The clean-up session went really well and we managed to collect six bin bags full of rubbish. I told the boys not to pick up any glass but they went all round the village and in front of the shops, too.

“There were cans and bottles and the usual rubbish that people throw down. Quite a lot of people came up to us and said how nice it was to see the boys helping.”

Byfleet Police Community Support Officer Linda Warland chatted to the cubs and Jean also gave them a quiz about litter.

Mrs Smith added: “This is the second clean-up day I  have done. The amenities group was set up in 2004 with the help of our chairman Anne Roberts.

“I think the boys really enjoyed the day and Serco were great by lending us the jackets, gloves and litter pickers to complete the job. I’m sure we will have another clean-up day next year.”
