Africa comes to New Haw

Africa arts was the theme at New HawJunior School

Africa arts was the theme at New HawJunior School

The normal curriculum at the school in The Avenue has been swapped for an African-themed arts week.
Art co-ordinator Suzie Wilcox said the children are enjoying the cultural experience at the workshops on offer.
She added: “We have arts week every year and it is always very popular. Some lessons get cancelled and there are workshops including music and performing. We are also having a Nigerian folk tale storytelling session.
“On Friday we will have an assembly, which will bring together all the work the children have done and some of them will perform. The children learnt some songs from the film The Lion King as part of hymn practice.”
Miss Wilcox explained the African theme was chosen as the school has a link with a school in Gulu, Uganda.
She said: “Our pupils have been writing to children at the Ugandan school and we have also been doing some fundraising for them. Children have been making masks and Egyptian collars, to tie in with the year three history topic on Egypt.
“They have also made Kenyan shields and bongo drums. The children have learnt Oware, which is an African mathematical logic game.
“It has been a really enjoyable time.
