Milestones, a three-bedroom semi-detached on Pyrford Road, was privately owned but after the occupiers died, it did not transfer to a single beneficiary.
While investigations into its ownership continued, the house remained vacant and became neglected and run-down. Woking Borough Council used its powers under the Law of Property Act 1925 to enforce the sale and the proceeds will be held for relatives.
Cllr Mehala Gosling, the borough council’s portfolio holder for housing, said: “The successful auction of this property is wonderful news.
“The demand for affordable housing in the borough is the council’s top priority and I am delighted this property will be providing a home to another family.”
Empty properties can become neglected and lead to potential health hazards. By bringing the properties back into use the street scene is improved. Pyrford councillor Peter Ankers said: “I am glad this matter has been brought to a satisfactory conclusion.”
The house was sold for £242,000 at the auction, which was conducted by Allsop, a property consultant.
