The statue of Christ disappeared from the church during a spate of vandalism in June 2002. Tony Lilley, who lives opposite the church, found the bronze body section of the statue in nearby woodland in May 2003. After searching for a further three hours he found the head and the left arm of the statue. The following Sunday the congregation formed a search party and found the right arm.
