The legendary Chris Barber celebrates his 59th year as a band leader with a new album, I Can’t Stop Now, and a tour with the Big Chris Barber Band which reaches Dorking Halls on Saturday, May 17. The man who was responsible for introducing some of the biggest names in blues to British audiences back in the 1950s is still going strong and blowing his trombone in the company of some top musicians. Farnham’s ace blues rockers Helium Soul will be previewing their forthcoming single and video when they appear at Aldershot’s West End Centre on Friday, May 16. Paul Jones takes his blues harp playing and vocalising to the Anvil in Basingstoke on Wednesday, May 21, where he joins forces with jazz aces Digby Fairweather’s Half Dozen – it was a combination which worked to great effect for Cranleigh Arts Centre’s annual fundraising bash just before Christmas, so a glorious night’s entertainment is guaranteed. The same night, but in the venue’s Forge, there’s a chance to catch up with veteran UK-based American folkie Julie Felix. And on Saturday, May 24, the Forge plays host to the Mor Karbasi Band. Mor is a young Israeli singer and composer of mixed Persian and Moroccan heritage, which she explores in song, producing a potent Middle Eastern brew which is sure to entrance. Classical, choral groups and concert bands
The Godalming Band celebrate their 70th anniversary by opening the Go Godalming Association’s season of summer Sunday concerts on May 18 from 3pm to 5pm at The Burys Bandstand, Godalming. The concert, which is free, will include music to suit all tastes. A special feature will be a tribute to Ralph Vaughan Williams – the band will play two movements from his Folksong Suite. There will also be a performance of the Radetsky March by J Strauss.
